Relatively few fossil dytiscids have been described. This is unfortunate since fossils can provide useful phylogenetic and evolutionary information including unique character combinations not present in extant taxa and minimum ages for divergences. However, even when fossils are found, important characters are often not visible since they may be poorly preserved or obscured. The fossil insects present in calcareous nodules from the Miocene Barstow Formation of the Calico Mountains in Southern California are exceptionally well preserved (Palmer, 1957). The original organisms are replaced by silica or other minerals and when the nodules are dissolved in formic acid, the three-dimensional fossil can be retrieved from the resulting residue. These nodules have yielded a wide variety of fossils, including larvae of the dytiscid species Schistomerus californense Palmer, 1957 and numerous other terrestrial and fresh-water arthropods (Palmer, 1957). The purposes of this paper are to describe a new dytiscid genus and species from an exceptionally well-preserved specimen from the Barstow Formation and to present a hypothesis of the phylogenetic placement of the new taxon.

Hamadiana chapadensis gen. n. and sp. n. is described based on a single male specimen collected in Central Brazil. The new species belongs to the diving beetle tribe Laccophilini but could not be assigned to any existing genera, therefore a new genus is described to accommodate it. Hamadiana gen. n. is unique among Laccophilini in having the hind margin of the metacoxal process deeply incised and medially slightly protruded backwards. In addition, it differs from other genera of the tribe by having the antennomeres simple, not expanded, the metacoxal lines not straight, and the metatibiae with two simple apical spurs. The habitus, male genitalia, and diagnostic features are illustrated, and a distribution map is provided. A recently published key to Laccophilini is modified to include the new genus.

We describe the monotypic shield-backed katydid genus Phymonotus and species jacintotopos from the San Jacinto Mountains of southern California, USA. Phymonotus is unique in having an unusually enlarged dome-like pronotum, a distinctive song, and seven additional distinctive morphological features. We believe that Phymonotus is a Pleistocene relic taxon, now endemic to geographically isolated high elevation conifer forests of the San Jacinto Mountains. Nearest relatives Agalothorax and Neduba taxa occur in lower elevation environments throughout the surrounding region. Phymonotus is a member of the katydid tribe Nedubini which has a Gondwanan distribution with additional taxa in Australia and South America (Chile and Argentina). Western North American Nedubini apparently result from a South American dispersal event. We also describe characters newly used for the description and diagnosis of Phymonotus, the dorsal and ventral lobes of the titillators, and the dorsal sclerites of the titillators. We report evidence that Phymonotus males may produce thoracic glandular secretions that are offered to mating females.

The first stygobiontic diving beetle known from Laos, Laodytes lapiei n. gen., n. sp., is described from a cave located in the Vientiane province. Its morphological characters lead to its placement, among Hydroporinae, in Hydroporini. Inside these, the new species could not be assigned to an existing genus. As a result, a new genus has been defined without it being possible, at the present stage, to assign it to one of the currently recognized subtribes.

In the paper six new species of the genus Oisenodes gen. nov. (Dermestidae, Trinodinae, Trinodini) are described: O. azari sp. nov., O. clavatus sp. nov., O. gallicus sp. nov., O. metepisternalis sp. nov., O. oisensis sp. nov. and O. transversus sp. nov. A new tribe Trinoparvini Hava, trib. nov. is established for the recent genus Trinoparvus Háva, 2004. Short review of known fossil records of the subfamily Trinodinae is given.

A new genus and species, Unguitarsonemus paradoxus n. gen., n. sp. and a new species, Pseudotarsonemoides peruviensis n. sp. (Acari: Trombidiformes: Tarsonemidae), are described based on phoretic females collected on bark beetles Phloeotribus pilula and Ph. biguttatus, respectively, from Peru. A key to species of the genus Pseudotarsonemoides is provided.

Abstract A new genus and species of carneyellid edrioasteroid, Spiracarneyella florencei n. gen. n. sp., is described from the Upper Ordovician (Kaitian) Point Pleasant Formation of northern Kentucky and southern Ohio. Spiracarneyella n. gen. is characterized by having all five ambulacra curving clockwise around the theca, having small node-bearing interambulacral plates in the distal interambulacra, and having the periproct placement slightly offset to the right side of the CD interambulacrum. The oral area of carneyellids evolved by paedomorphosis of the oral plates covering the mouth. The straight ambulacra of Cryptogoleus and the spiraling ambulacra of Spiracarneyella n. gen. evolved by paedomorphosis and peramorphosis, respectively.
